How are Reading Bands Measured?

Score to Band Conversion

On the IELTS reading test, you get a score from 0 to 40.

Here is the score to band conversion:

What do these band scores mean?

  • Band 9: You have an excellent command of written English and can understand a wide range of texts, including complex and technical materials.
  • Band 8: You have a very good command of written English and can understand most texts, including those with some unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts.
  • Band 7: You have a good command of written English and can understand a range of texts, but may struggle with some unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts.
  • Band 6: You have an adequate command of written English and can understand a limited range of texts, but may struggle with a more complex or unfamiliar language.
  • Band 5: You have a limited command of written English and may struggle to understand a wide range of texts.
  • Band 4 or lower: You have a weak command of written English and may struggle to understand even basic written English.
