How are Listening Bands Measured?

The listening module has 40 questions, and you earn 1 point for each correct answer. Your score ranges from 0 to 40, and here is how to convert that score into a band.

Here is a rough conversion of listening scores to band scores:

What do these bands mean?

Here is what these band scores mean:

  • Band 9: You have an excellent command of spoken English and can understand a wide range of accents, idioms, and colloquial expressions.
  • Band 8: You have a very good command of spoken English and can understand most accents, idioms, and colloquial expressions.
  • Band 7: You have a good command of spoken English and can understand a range of accents and idioms, but may struggle with some colloquial expressions.
  • Band 6: You have an adequate command of spoken English and can understand a limited range of accents and idioms, but may struggle with a more complex or unfamiliar language.
  • Band 5: You have a limited command of spoken English and may struggle to understand a wide range of accents and idioms.
  • Band 4 or lower: You have a weak command of spoken English and may struggle to understand even basic spoken English.
