Listening Part 1: Explanation and Examples

The listening section of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to assess your ability to understand spoken English in a variety of contexts. The listening section is divided into four parts, with a total of 40 questions.

Part 1 of the listening section consists of a series of short exchanges between two or more speakers, such as a conversation between friends or a customer service interaction. You will be asked a total of 10 questions about the exchanges, and you will have 10 minutes to listen to the exchanges and answer the questions.

In this part of the test, you will be asked to identify specific information, such as the speakers’ names or the location of an event. You may also be asked to identify the speakers’ attitudes or opinions.
