How are WRITING bands measured?

The reading section of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9, with 9 being the highest score. Your reading score is calculated based on your performance on a range of criteria, including your ability to understand the main ideas and details of the texts, follow the development of the argument or discussion, and understand the attitudes and feelings of the authors.

Here is a rough conversion of reading bands to scores:

  • Band 9: You have an excellent command of written English and can understand a wide range of texts, including complex and technical materials.
  • Band 8: You have a very good command of written English and can understand most texts, including those with some unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts.
  • Band 7: You have a good command of written English and can understand a range of texts, but may struggle with some unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts.
  • Band 6: You have an adequate command of written English and can understand a limited range of texts, but may struggle with more complex or unfamiliar language.
  • Band 5: You have a limited command of written English and may struggle to understand a wide range of texts.
  • Band 4 or lower: You have a weak command of written English and may struggle to understand even basic written English.

It’s important to note that the IELTS band scores are not percentages or grades, but rather a measure of your ability relative to the other test takers. The band scores are based on a scale from 0 to 9, with half bands (e.g. 6.5, 7.5) also possible. The specific band score requirements may vary depending on your intended use of the IELTS results, such as applying to a university or seeking immigration to a particular country.
